States Where Sports Betting Is Legal
Iowa legalized sports gambling in 2019, with multiple sites beginning to take bets at the end of that summer. Less than a month after the Supreme Court’s decision, Delaware moved to fully legalize sports betting. Three casinos began operating sportsbooks in June and the state is looking to add additional locations as well as mobile betting. Although this is more the exception than the rule, some states only allow mobile wagers to be transmitted from casino premises. The floodgates were suddenly open for states to pass their own sports betting legislation.
Mobile betting is also allowed under the law, but a person must first travel to a casino to prove age and identity, as well as set up an account. The state was able to roll out sportsbooks so quickly because it was grandfathered to offer parlay betting during the federal ban. A joint resolution was introduced on Jan 8, 2019 to create a ballot referendum to amend the state constitution to allow for various forms of gambling, including on sports. All forms of gambling were banned starting in 1846, when Iowa first became a state.
Colorado sports bettors wagered an incredible $210,719,821 at state retail and online sportsbooks. The bill passed rather easily in the summer of 2019, but it wasn’t without opposition. Some detractors hoped to see a $100 limit placed on all sports wagers, while others pushed for the inclusion of race tracks to offer sports betting. The launch became possible due to a disputed claim from the Santa Ana’s ownership, the Pueblo of Santa Ana Tribe.
Massachusetts – 14 new bills introduced in the legislative session; three casinos will get sportsbooks skins. Sports betting in Oklahoma is a bit of a trickery territory, given the nature between the state and it’s tribal casino owners. Online sportsbooks went live in November 2020, when DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and Tennessee Action 24/7 started taking their first bets. The only other tribal casino to also introduce a sportsbook in Oregon is The Mill Casino located in North Bend. However, the Arkansas Racing Commission is considering updating its rules, a change that would have to be approved by a legislative committee. They also launched the first retail sportsbook in New Hampshire in August of 2020 at The Brook in Seabrook.
“Black Friday,” which shut down the comparatively smaller market for internet poker,47 might one day be regarded as a dress rehearsal. Mobile sports betting has made its way to a quite a bit of the states that have passed measures to legalize sports betting. Mississippi has mobile betting, but this is limited only to the grounds of licensed casinos that have operational books. Delaware is something of a special case, as it is legally able to offer mobile sports betting via its state lottery, but that product has not yet rolled out. Tennessee is in a unique position as the only state that has legalized mobile betting but not land-based betting. Eventually, of course, almost all states that establish their own legal sports betting industries will.
Montana offers legal sports betting through the state’s lottery system. It was first authorized in 2019 and later launched in March of 2020. Legal wagers by anyone 18 or older can be placed online through the use of the Sports Bet Montana app which is operated by INTRALOT.
